Dunkelwald/Twilight Sky (2011-2015)

The large drawings in this series reach up to 3.5 metres long and are developed over an extended period of time of 6 months or more. A repeated sequence of colours is used to fill a hand drawn grid. When mistakes in the sequence occur, they remain, creating a disrupted pattern. The title ‘Dunkelwald’ derives from the names of the pencils used, evoking a German heritage of the sinister and sublime.
The work ‘Twilight Sky (for Horst P. Horst and Helene Rochas)’, 2014-15, takes colours from a painted, negative image of Horst P. Horst’s portrait of Helene Rochas in her Paris office (1968).
