The ‘Bathers’ series responds to Georges Seurat’s ‘Bathers at Asnieres’ (National Gallery, London). Repeated and overlaid areas of watercolour create shifting movements across these expansive works, complicating the relationship between surface and depth. All three large ‘Bathers’ works were made in 2022 and are the subject of a new body of video work made in 2023, ‘Some Light in the Shadows’, part of an ongoing research project ‘Painting in the Age of Digital Reproduction’ with University of the Arts London, POSTECH and Dankook University, South Korea. ‘Bathers1’ and the related moving image work ‘Some Light in the Shadows’, were shown at the Korean Cultural Centre UK, in ‘Transfer: Korean and British Abstract Painting and the Digital Document’ 2023, and were the subject of my paper ‘Some Light in the Shadows: Touch, Time and Movement in Real and Digital Space’ given at Art Sonje Centre Theatre, Seoul, Korea at the Symposium: ‘Painting in the Age of Digital Reproduction’, 2023, published in The Journal of Art Theory & Practice 36 (The Korean Society of Art Theories).
